Learning Lab: LGBTQ+ Safe Spaces and Community Advocacy

Learning Lab: LGBTQ+ Safe Spaces and Community Advocacy
According to a recent Gallup poll, the percentage of US adults who self-identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender or something other than heterosexual has increased to a new high of 7.1%, which is double from the percentage in 2012, when Gallup first measured it. (Jones, 2022) How are you and your agency keeping up with the changing times and creating a more inclusive environment for the LGBTQ+ community? In celebration of Pride Month, we’re happy to bring you Jory Zhang, Training Specialist for the Center of Education, Research, and Advocacy at Howard Brown Health, as he helps you understand how organizational and policy transformations encourage an inclusive environment, and how to leverage your privilege to advocate for the LGBTQ+ community in the workplace and beyond. This event is generously sponsored by Sourcewell and offered in cooperation with the Illinois Association of Park Districts (IAPD).

Learning Objectives:
1) Demonstrate an understanding of the LGBTQ+ community within a power / oppression framework, 2) Identify ways to create safe spaces for the LGBTQ+ community in park and recreation centers, forest preserve district facilities, and other organizational spaces, 3) apply knowledge of peer and self-reflection to leverage one's own privilege with the goal of advocating for LGBTQ+ community members at the workplace and beyond.

Who Should Attend:
Park and recreation, conservation, and forest preserve district professionals interested in learning how to better advocate for the LGBTQ+ community through organizational / policy changes and self-reflection.
