Forest Preserve & Conservation Section Field Tour:  May 2022
You are invited to join the Forest Preserve & Conservation Committee to tour Greene Valley and Whalon Lake Forest Preserves in Naperville, Illinois, to learn more about preserve activities and initiatives.  For those that have the additional time and interest, there will also be opportunities to tour the Hidden Oaks Nature Center and Hidden Lakes Trout Farm and discussion of the paddling programs at Whalon Lake, with option to kayak as well (kayaks will be provided), after the main tour. If you’re looking for the opportunity to tour other preserves, or simply want to learn more about their initiatives to use at your agency, you are encouraged to join us. The event is open to members and non-members from all regions of Illinois. Registration is limited to the first 50 people, so don't miss out!

Who Should Attend:  Park, Forest Preserve, and Conservation District professionals of varying levels of experience and special interests seeking to learn more about management and programs at forest preserves.

Event Timeline:
9:15am:  Welcome
9:30 - 10:25am:  Greene Valley Forest Preserve, North Lot
10:25am:  Return to vehicles and depart north lot
10:40 - 11:30am:  Green Valley Forest Preserve, South Lot
11:30am:  Return to vehicles and depart overlook
11:45am - 12:30pm:  Whalon Lake, Lakeside Shelter
12:30 - 1:10pm:  Whalon Lake Forest Preserve, Lakeside Trail
1:15 - 1:45pm:  Whalon Lake Forest Preserve, Wetlands
1:50 - 2:20pm:  Whalon Lake Forest Preserve, Dog Park
2:20 pm:  Conclusion, wrap up and send off
2:30 - 4:00pm:  Bonus or Extended Day Options - Acquisition and transition planning at Hidden Oaks Nature Center, Hidden Lakes Trout Farm OR Paddle Programs at Whalon Lake (Note: Space may be limited at Whalon Lake. Participants can bring their own craft).  Participants will choose which Bonus option they wish to attend under Program Items when registering. 

Learning Objectives:  
1.  Gain an understanding of the challenges in developing and maintaining recreational facilities constructed within heavily disturbed reclaimed lands.
2.  Learn land management and volunteer restoration tips and tools.
3.  Examine regional master planning initiatives and successful implementation through partnerships.
4.  Learn the similarities and differences on how different agencies design and manage dog parks.

To Register:  
Login to your IPRA account (See "Sign in" to the right or below), then scroll down to select "Register Myself".  If you are not an IPRA member, create an account (See create a new account under "Sign in", then register for the event). 

How to Participate:  This event will take place in person so that visitors can see the preserves in person.  We will begin at Greene Valley Forest Preserve picnic shelter near the off leash dog facility northeast of 75th Street and Greene Road.  The tour will end at Whalon Lake main picnic shelter, entrance at Lisson Road and Royce Road.  We will drive from the starting point, to the second stop at Greene Valley near the scenic overlook and finally to the Whalon Lake Picnic Shelter and therefore, if you can carpool with others from your agency, it is encouraged.  The remaining stops will be via the trails at Whalon Lake on foot.

Lunch:  Lunch will include a choice of turkey, roast beef, or vegetarian sandwiches, a bag of chips, pasta salad, and a cookie.  

Event Safety:  Any participant who has tested positive for COVID-19 or has been exposed to the coronavirus or has symptoms of any illness should stay home and seek medical care if necessary.

Fee: $20.00 IPRA Member / $30.00 Non-Member

CEUs:  Event is approved for 0.4 CEUs and will only be awarded to those in attendance for the full event from 9:00am - 2:20pm (Continuing Education Units are for certifications such as CPRE, CPRP, CTRS). 

Cancellations: Refunds will be issued to requests received on or before May 3, 2022, less a 20% administrative fee. No refunds will be issued for cancellations received after May 3, 2022.
